이 바닥 사람들이 요즘 매쉬업(mash-up)이란 단어를 흔하게 쓰고 있는데 개념을 제대로 세우진 못하고 일단 따라 쓰는 경향이 강한 것 같다. 매쉬업은 원 단어대로 번역하면 "콘텐트를 뒤섞는다"는 의미... 즉, 짬뽕한다는 소리다. 다만 웹 2.0에서 이 단어는 단서가 붙는데 부가가치(added value)를 재생산한다는 것이다. 부가가치는 꼭 돈을 의미하지는 않는다.
위키피디어에는 이런 식으로 정의하고 있다.

웹 2.0에서 써 먹는 정의와는 좀 차이가 있다. www.whatis.com에서는 어떻게 정의하고 있을까? IT 관련 용어에 대해서는 위키피디어보다 훨씬 잘 정리된 DB를 제공하는 곳 답게 아주 상세히 정리하고 있다.

Like blogs, vlogs and tagging, mash-ups are part of an ongoing shift towards more a more interactive and participatory Web (Web 2.0) with more user-defined content and services. According to Aaron Boodman, quoted in BusinessWeek online, "The Web was originally designed to be mashed up. The technology is finally growing up and making it possible."
The term mash-up originated in the music industry. It is sometimes spelled mashup.

예를 들어, 구글검색엔진 API랑 네이버 검색 API를 가져다가 자기 홈페이지에 mash-up(짬뽕) 해놓고 독자적인 검색사이트를 구축한것처럼 주장하는 사이트... 이도 매쉬업의 한 예이고, 올블로그(allblog)나 오픈블로그(openblog) 처럼 남의 RSS를 가져다가 포탈을 구축하는 것도 매쉬업인 것이다.
매쉬 업이라는 개념은 본격적인 개방과 교류의 원칙을 지키자는 웹 2.0 의 정신을 보여주는 하나의 트렌드라 할 수 있겠고... 최근에는 다음과 네이버가 각기 자사의 공개 API 를 활용한 결과물을 공모하는 매쉬업 경진대회(http://mashupkorea.org/) 를 개최해서 많은 화제를 모으기도 했다. 국내 포탈의 대표적인 라이벌인 다음과 네이버가 손을 잡았다는 것도 흥미롭지만, 두 업체의 API 를 짬뽕해서 새로운 서비스를 창출한다는 것 자체가 Mash Up 이라는 이상에 정확히 일치한다고 생각해 볼 수 있다. =)
